Subjective and Objective Claims

Objective Claim: an assertion on a factual subject that can either be proven true or false by . It is made up from factual evidence and not through the opinions or beliefs of others.

Example:

Yesterday my brother stated that he did not have school the next day. My parents did not believe in his statement so they called the school to confirm. By doing so, they realized that he really did not have school. This is a perfect example of an objective claim because it is a true fact that he did not have school the next day and it can be proven with factual evidence.

Subjective Claim: is a claim that is not based on facts. It is based on someone else’s beliefs, opinions, or some non factual evidence. This type of Claim can not be proven either right nor wrong.

Example:

Today my friends claimed that the LA Lakers are going to lose the Championship to the Boston Celtics. This claim can not be true or false because the series has not ended yet. This claim was based on my friend’s opinion instead of actual fact.

  2. I like the use of subjective and objective claims in both of your examples. They are very strong. The objective claim of your brother telling his parents that he did not have school the next day is true because he can back this up with evidence by calling the school even if his parents did not believe him.
The subjective example was very strong too as your friends claimed that the Lakers are going to lose to the Celtics. It's only their opinion so it doesn't mean that the Lakers are going to lose. As long as the game has not ended, anything can be possible.

  3. In the text, it says a claim is, "A declarative sentence used in such a way that it is either true or false (but not both)." So a subjective claim is based on whether it is true or false, but it's truth-value is relative to personal standards. Like if I was to say, "Vanilla ice cream tastes better than chocolate ice cream," this is true to me (but may not be for you). Does that kind of make sense to you? Lol sorry to put you on blast... it's sort of hard to find interesting things to say in response to claims.

PS I deleted my previous comment because it was 96 words, and we need at least 100 words to receive credit. (In case you were confused). Haha. :)
